New York magazine has published a survey of software that can print in different materials, including acrylics, metals, ceramics, glass, glass-oil and steel.
The survey asks users which software they would use for 3d printing.
Most of the top picks are free, with only the popular open source software like Thingiverse and Thingiverse 3D printers.
Some of the most popular software is free or at least for a small cost.
The survey, which also includes a review of 3D printer software, is aimed at hobbyists and enthusiasts, as well as those with limited time or who can’t afford the full set of software.
“I’m more interested in hobbyists who want to print in glass, which has been my hobby since I was a kid, or people who want a more professional looking print, and maybe those who want something a little more expensive, or have some budget constraints,” said Sarah Hirsch, who created a 3D print of a house in New York City for a local charity.
Hirsch said her favorite 3D-printing software is Thingiverse, a free-to-use 3D software designed for home use.
Thingiverse offers a “3D printer of your choice,” she said, including “pretty basic” and “very basic” models.
Thingos creators have built more advanced 3D models with more features and customization.
But the free software, which is currently open source, is only suitable for printable objects, which means it can’t print a whole house.
“The biggest thing is you have to be careful, because you can’t go into a garage and print the house out.
You can’t even open a garage door,” said Hirsch.
“If you’re doing something like a 3-D-printed car, then it’s pretty safe, because the 3-d printer is already inside the car, but if you’re printing a house, that might not work.”
In the survey, people were asked to choose the three most common 3D printed items: an acrylic painting, glass model, and metal model.
People were also asked to list their favorite software for printing and for 3-axis 3D.
The most popular 3D model was a glass-ocean sculpture.
People chose the open source 3D modeling software 3D Studio Max, which includes the option for users to print directly from the app, rather than a third-party 3D platform like Thing.
A few other 3D tools like 3D Builder, 3D Printr, and 3D Maker were also included.
“It’s a little tricky to pick a software because the number of people using the software has dropped dramatically in the last few years,” said Jennifer Baugh, director of digital innovation at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
“A lot of people are getting rid of the software.”
But some people use it for more creative purposes.
“Some people use the software to do cool art,” said Baugh.
“Other people use that software to create 3-dimensional objects.”
“It might be that someone is just looking for a way to print a 3d object,” she added.
“Maybe you need to have a 3 dimensional object, and the 3D is the way to do that.”
There are some exceptions to the rule.
“If you are printing a metal object, that’s really the only thing I’d pick,” said Adam Langer, who teaches industrial design at the U of I.
Langer said the best way to use 3D, is “to do it as a hobby and try to create as many 3D objects as you can.”
“I’ve been using Thingiverse for quite a few years, and I have no problem,” he said.
“It’s free, so it’s an inexpensive way to create things.”

“But I think a lot of times the people you see at Maker Faires are doing it for really good reasons.
It’s just that it’s not really something you can do for a big budget.”
Hirsch, however, is not against the idea of a DIY 3D hobbyist community.
“In a lot to do in a lot, there’s a lot that needs to be done, and there’s probably a lot more people who could do it, because they’re just getting a lot done,” she explained.
“You can have a really cool 3D design, and you can print it on a computer and then get it printed out.”
But she said she has some reservations about the idea that everyone should be doing it.
“We have to understand that you have people that are using the free and open source models,” she told WIRED.
